Bill Belichick is considered one of the greatest minds in the NFL. However, they say that two heads are better than one, which is why, before giving the go-ahead to North Carolina, the veteran strategist preferred to consult with some of his peers, starting with the most famous former Tar Heel, Michael Jordan.
Belichick has not stopped being in the headlines this year. From his resignation from the New England Patriots to his romance with a woman 50 years younger, the six-time NFL champion has been in the news time and time again.
Just this week, the former Pats coach made headlines again when he announced that he would be the new head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Although the announcement took media and fans by surprise, Belichick just revealed that he did not take the step before speaking with “His Airness.”
Bill Belichick x Michael Jordan
At a press conference, Belichick revealed he had spoken with several of North Carolina’s most prominent alumni. In addition to Jordan, the coach admitted speaking with former NFL stars Lawrence Taylor and Julius Peppers before giving the “I do” to the Tar Heels.
Belichick did not give details of the conversations, but assured everyone was “very supportive.” He emphasized, “There’s been a ton of support, from ex-players and other UNC alums.”
He explained that after speaking with the team members he had concluded that “This is a great brand and a great support system here. So I’m excited to spend more time with these people.”
The rebuilding work begins
Belichick will not have an easy job. The 2024-2025 season was disappointing for North Carolina, which finished the campaign 12th in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 3-5 record within the conference and 6-6 overall.
However, the strategist is not afraid of a little hard work. What’s more, he has already made it clear that he does not plan to leave the team, even if he receives better offers from NFL teams. “I didn’t come here to leave,” Belichick said before getting down to work.
