The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that they are keeping all options open for the left tackle position this offseason. Head coach Andy Reid confirmed that the team is actively exploring both free agency and the NFL Draft to address this key roster spot.

The left tackle position has been a point of concern for the Chiefs, especially after their Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Last season, guard Joe Thuney was forced to shift to left tackle due to inconsistent play from Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris. This move left the offensive line in a state of flux, with backup Mike Caliendo stepping in at guard, which was not ideal for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Reid emphasized that Thuney will be moving back to his natural position at guard in 2025, leaving the left tackle spot open. “We’re keeping everything wide open there as we do this thing,” Reid said. “We’re really digging in on what’s available potentially in free agency and what’s available in the draft. It’s probably too early to go there, but that’s a position that we’re looking at for sure.”

There is a lot of work to be done

The Chiefs are expected to evaluate several prospects at the scouting combine, including Oregon’s standout tackle Josh Conerly Jr., who has been linked to Kansas City in multiple mock drafts. Additionally, the team may consider veteran free agents like Cam Robinson or Ronnie Stanley to fill the position.

General Manager Brett Veach acknowledged the challenges of addressing the left tackle position, especially given the competitive nature of the market. “We just have to think outside the box and put some creative plans together,” Veach said.

As the offseason progresses, the Chiefs will be closely monitoring all available options to ensure they solidify the left tackle position and provide better protection for Mahomes in the upcoming season.
