Patrick Mahomes’ injury deeply shook Kansas City Chiefs players and fans alike. As the team’s medical staff rushed to the quarterback on the field, his teammates gathered around him in a moment of heartfelt prayer.
With two minutes remaining and the Chiefs trailing by three, Arrowhead Stadium held its breath, hoping for yet another Mahomes miracle. Instead, disaster struck again.
Coming out of the two-minute warning, the Chiefs had crossed midfield and were roughly five yards from kicker Harrison Butker’s maximum range.
The pocket collapsed, forcing Mahomes to sprint to his right with defensive end De’Shawn Hand in pursuit. Just as Mahomes released the ball, Hand brought him down.
At first, it looked like a routine tackle. But the moment Mahomes hit the turf, he grabbed his knee in obvious pain. The Chiefs’ medical staff immediately rushed onto the field.
The Chiefs joined in prayer for Mahomes
Beyond the 16-13 home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers – and the team’s first playoff elimination in 11 seasons – what mattered most to the players was the condition of their leader.
As paramedics attended to Mahomes, television cameras captured offensive linemen Kingsley Suamataia, Mike Caliendo, and Donovan Smith kneeling in distress, praying for their quarterback.
Even Chargers players appeared shaken. Linebacker Denzel Perryman was shown on one knee, watching with concern as Mahomes was treated.
Eventually, the Chiefs’ medical staff escorted Mahomes to the medical tent. Gardner Minshew finished the final seconds of the game while the team anxiously awaited news.
Mahomes’ season is over – but what about the Chiefs’ dynasty?
According to a statement on the Chiefs’ official X (formerly Twitter) account, “An MRI has confirmed that Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes sustained a torn ACL in his left knee in today’s game. Patrick and the club are currently exploring surgical options.”
After the game, Mahomes attempted to downplay the injury, saying he hoped to return as soon as possible.
But the diagnosis ended those hopes. Some experts believe the recovery timeline could even jeopardize the start of next season. And with the team already facing major questions, fans are left wondering: could this be the beginning of the end for the Chiefs’ dynasty?
