ESPN made a series of unexpected personnel decisions on Thursday, parting ways with former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III and longtime host Sam Ponder.
The news has surprised many in the sports media world, especially given how close we are to the start of the NFL season, and ESPN will broadcast games.

Robert Griffin III, also known as RG3, had been with ESPN for three years and was serving as an analyst on “Monday NFL Countdown” and a color commentator for the network’s college football coverage.
However, Griffin’s role on “Monday NFL Countdown” had already been reduced this season after the network brought on retired Eagles center Jason Kelce. Despite having two years remaining on his contract, ESPN decided to cut ties with Griffin, despite his increasing popularity on social media.
Griffin, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2011 while at Baylor and was the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, could potentially find a new role quickly. One possible landing spot is NFL Network’s “GameDay Morning” studio show, which has yet to replace former host Michael Irvin.
Sam Ponder, who joined ESPN in 2011 and became the host of “Sunday NFL Countdown” in 2017, was also let go as part of the network’s cost-cutting measures.
Ponder has been a prominent figure on ESPN, not only for her hosting duties but also for her outspoken views on social media, particularly regarding the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
What was the reason behind the move?
The departures of Griffin and Ponder are being attributed to budgetary reasons as ESPN looks to reduce expenses before the fiscal year ends in September.
Both personalities had time remaining on their contracts, but the network’s decision to release them now allows ESPN to write off the costs immediately.
As both Griffin and Ponder leave ESPN, the future remains uncertain for these sports media veterans. With Griffin potentially eyeing a role at NFL Network and Ponder’s established presence in sports broadcasting, it will be interesting to see where they land next.
