Kevin Durant’s trade to the Houston Rockets wasn’t exactly a shock. The legendary forward had sensed for some time that his departure from the Phoenix Suns was looming-but that didn’t stop him from sending a farewell message that some are reading as more than just a goodbye.

Durant joined the Suns in the 2023 offseason in a blockbuster move. Now, Phoenix is sending the 18-year veteran to Houston in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the Rockets’ 10th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and five second-round selections.

The trade drama peaked during Durant’s appearance at Fanatics Fest in New York. Mid-interview with Taylor Rooks, KD received word of the deal going through. Though he remained composed, he had one final message for the Suns’ front office.

“Everyone got what they wanted”

Durant didn’t stay quiet for long. Shortly after the trade was announced, he spoke with Kay Adams about his move to Houston: “Being part of the Houston Rockets, I’m looking forward to it.”

He admitted that he knew the trade was coming, just not when. Still, he framed it as a mutual win: “They wanted me to go, so glad they got what they wanted. I got what I wanted, so we can move on.”

Then came his farewell-a line that struck many fans and media outlets as subtly pointed: “Good luck to them going forward. I’ll always remember my time there, but we’re on to something else.”

KD’s tank is far from empty

The Suns ended the 2024 season with a 36-46 record, narrowly missing the playoffs. But Durant delivered another elite campaign, averaging 26.6 points, six rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.

Now, he starts a new chapter in Houston, joining a rising roster that includes Fred VanVleet, Alperen Sengn, and Amen Thompson. After falling in the first round of the playoffs, the Rockets are banking on Durant’s leadership and experience to push them toward their first NBA Finals appearance in three decades.
