As the anticipation for English Tourism Week (March 15-24, 2024) grows, Shropshire is hosting a number of specialized workshops aimed at bolstering businesses within the tourism and visitor economy sectors. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to cement the county’s status as a notable travel destination.
The timing is impeccable, following a recent accolade from ABTA – The Travel Association, which placed Shropshire among the top ten global tourist destinations to watch in January 2024. Visit Shropshire spearheaded the organization of these workshops, financed by Shropshire Council through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, to elevate the county’s reputation further in the travel sector.
The workshops, designed to enrich industry professionals with vital knowledge and strategies, have seen participation from over a hundred delegates, showcasing the interest and commitment within the Shropshire community to enhancing its travel appeal.
These educational sessions are a response to ABTA’s recognition, aimed at leveraging Shropshire’s potential as a prime travel locale by providing industry insiders with the tools to boost the county’s tourism profile.
Mark Hooper of Visit Shropshire emphasized the significant contribution of the visitor economy to the local market, highlighting the support of 10,776 jobs and generating ÂŁ987 million. He acknowledged the crucial role of collaborative efforts with Shropshire Council in stimulating growth within the tourism sector, resulting in job creation and increased investments.
Meanwhile, Robert Macey from Shropshire Council expressed enthusiasm for elevating the county’s tourism and visitor economy. He underscored the importance of the ABTA rating in showcasing Shropshire’s offerings on a global scale. The workshops are aimed at empowering the local community and stakeholders by merging their interests with cutting-edge market research to spawn innovative business concepts that benefit both the economy and visitors.
With English Tourism Week serving as a springboard for the spring/summer travel season, Shropshire aims to enhance domestic tourism by spotlighting local attractions. The council’s strategy involves collaboration with partners and industry experts to position Shropshire as an ideal relocation and visitation destination, with objectives focused on unifying under ‘One Shropshire’, fostering economic growth in tourism, and promoting the county as a deserving candidate for future tourism funding.
