Lakers might be forced to look elsewhere for a HC as Mavericks will look to extend Jason Kidd

The Los Angeles Lakers are looking for a new head coach after firing Darvin Ham this week. There is a lot of uncertainty within the organization after LeBron James future is up in the air.

He declined comments on whether he would continue with the team after being once again being eliminated by the Denver Nuggets and Ham was the one who took the fall, at least for now.

Now, the Lakers have a long list of candidates to be their new coach, a list that includes Los Angeles Clippers Ty Lue and former NBA player and now commentator JJ Reddick, but the options dont stop there.

The Lakers are also targeting current Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, but some obstacles are in the teams way. Earlier this week reports emerged on a contract extension by the Clippers to Ty Lue and know the Mavs reportedly are going to try and do the same thing with Kidd.

Reports of extension to candidates could complicate the Lakers intentions

NBA insider Marc Stein reported that extension offer will come in the summer if not sooner.

“Mavericks coach Jason Kidd, who like (Ty) Lue has only one season left on his current contract, would also be an obvious target for the Lakers – if Kidd were to become available,” Stein wrote. “That, however, is not expected to happen. League sources say Kidd is also the likely recipient of a contract extension in the near future, having led Dallas to two 50-win seasons and three playoff series wins in four attempts in his three seasons as Mavericks coach.”

Reaching an agreement with a coach that is linked and inked to a team long term is complicated, but not impossible. The only thing is that a lot of money and possibly players might have to be involved. Only time will tell if they can afford to do it but a new coach in LA is needed.
