Fans on social media pounced. As one commenter wrote: “in all seriousness Bronny needs to be cut after this season.”
Another added, “Bronny comes in, falls asleep on defensive and gets back doored, then throws the ball outa bounds. Not great.”
The box score from that night offered little solace. James ended with 5 points, 1 assist, and 1 steal, going 2-of-3 from the field during what was his debut at TD Garden.
The blunder comes as the Lakers were missing key contributors, LeBron James and Luka Doncic.
Uneven performance from Bronny
It isn’t the first time Bronny‘s inconsistency has drawn heavy criticism. Earlier this season, in limited action against the Portland Trail Blazers, he went scoreless in 20 minutes, prompting some to argue he might be among the “worst players in the NBA.”
Still, the young guard has shown flashes of potential in other contexts. In a March 2025 game against the Milwaukee Bucks, he recorded a careerhigh 17 points along with five assists and three rebounds, a showing that his supporters point to as evidence of what he could become.
Even within the organization, there has been acknowledgment of that potential. Coach JJ Redick, after that Bucks game, said he believed Bronny has “his head on straight,” and expressed confidence that the young guard could become a reliable NBA contributor.
Yet outside the bubble of hopeful development from teammates and coaches, critics remain vocal, especially when mistakes occur under a harsh spotlight.
Some dismiss his opportunities as merely due to his lineage, questioning whether he deserves a spot that could go to a more deserving player with much less pressure on his shoulders.
James‘ turnover in a depressed Lakers lineup might seem small in the grand scheme of an NBA game, but in his case, it carries outsized weight. For a player fighting to prove himself amid constant scrutiny, every misstep is scrutinized heavily.
