Since being taken first overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, Zion Williamson’s career hasn’t just failed to reach the expected heights, it hasn’t even stayed on the map long enough to establish a legacy. Coming out of Duke, Zion was hailed as one of the most dominant prospects in the history of the sport, joining an elite club as one of the few freshmen, alongside Kevin Durant (2007), Anthony Davis (2012), and most recently Cooper Flagg-to win the Oscar Robertson Trophy. However, while those other names transitioned into consistent stardom, Zion’s narrative has been defined by the training table. In six seasons, he has missed an entire year (2021-22) and has managed to play more than 35 games in a season only twice.
New Zion Williamson’s Paternity Scandal
The injury bug isn’t the only thing dragging down Zion’s reputation. For years, he has been a lightning rod for criticism regarding his weight and apparent lack of commitment to professional conditioning. Now, a fresh off-court distraction has the internet buzzing for all the wrong reasons.
A viral video posted by an OnlyFans model known as “Dopechick69” appears to show Zion in a private residence, seemingly recorded without his knowledge. Along with the footage, the model shared a screenshot of a $2,000 bank transfer, claiming that the Pelicans star is the father of her child.
While $2,000 is a drop in the bucket for a man on a five-year, $197,230,450 contract, the optics are disastrous. This situation feels like a recurring nightmare for a player who should be the face of the league but instead finds himself mired in tabloid drama. The timing is equally poor for the Pelicans, who currently sit at the bottom of the Western Conference standings.
Despite Zion averaging a respectable 22.8 points in the 12 games since returning from his most recent injury, the constant noise surrounding his personal life suggests his career is trending toward “bust” territory due to a lack of focus. When healthy and dialed in, he remains a physical marvel in the paint, but those moments are becoming increasingly rare.
Mapping Zion Williamson’s Off-Court Legal and Personal Turmoil
This latest paternity claim is unfortunately just one chapter in a long book of off-court headaches for Williamson. To understand the frustration of the Pelicans’ front office, one only needs to look at his history over the last few years:
The Moriah Mills Saga (2023): Perhaps the most explosive incident occurred when adult film star Moriah Mills went on a weeks-long social media tirade against Zion. Following his announcement that he was expecting a child with another woman (Ahkeema), Mills claimed they were in a relationship and threatened to release explicit tapes, leading to her eventual ban from several social media platforms.
The Prime Sports Marketing Lawsuit: Early in his career, Zion was embroiled in a legal battle with Gina Ford of Prime Sports Marketing. The firm sued him for $100 million after he broke their marketing agreement to sign with CAA. The case turned ugly when Ford’s legal team attempted to force Zion to admit he had received illegal benefits while at Duke, a move that could have jeopardized his collegiate records.
Fitness and Commitment Criticisms: NBA legends like Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal have repeatedly and publicly called out Zion for his physique. Reports have surfaced indicating the Pelicans have tried to include weight and body fat percentage clauses in his contract to protect their nearly $200 million investment-a rarity for a player of his talent level.
Zion is only 25, so he can still get his career back on track and become the dominant star he has shown himself to be. He has a future ahead of him if he focuses on playing. However, it would be best for him and the Pelicans if he sought a trade for a fresh start.
