James Gunn shares the best look yet of Jason Momoa as Lobo in a new Supergirl teaser

Before everyone who takes a mental health break from the internet for the weekend logs off, James Gunn is giving DC fans what they want with a fresh look at Jason Momoa’s Lobo for the upcoming Supergirl film. Gunn shared a short video on social media today, featuring Jason Momoa looking extra excited to play the Main Man, Lobo, for the upcoming superhero movie starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El.

Jason Momoa rides into the DC Universe as the Main Man

In the video, Jason Momoa steps out of his trailer, a shit-eating grin on his face. The person holding the camera, following Momoa to a nearby vehicle, asks if he’s got anything to say about playing the iconic DC bounty hunter in the Craig Gillespie-directed feature. Momoa simply responds, “Finally.” The video then shows unseen footage from Supergirl. The first shot depicts Lobo on his trusty motorcycle, a chain dropping into frame at his side, the hook at the end glinting against nearby flames. After that, we get a great shot of Lodo driving through a wall of fire before he flashes a sharp-toothed smile for the camera. Momoa looks positively perfect as Lobo, like he leapt directly off the comic book page.

Interestingly, Lobo is not part of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic that informs much of Gillespie’s new film. Initially, Lobo was in a rough draft of the story, but writer Tom King left him on the cutting room floor. With the movie taking a new approach to the story, there’s room for Lobo’s part of the tale to return.

Gunn on adding Lobo to Supergirl’s story

“The truth is that Woman of Tomorrow in the comics is very much, it’s a bunch of little stories, and we needed to create one throughline, one three-act story, more traditional story,” Gunn said in an interview. “So Lobo helps us to do that. It’s not an amalgamation of him and Krem. He’s a totally separate character. He’s himself. I love Lobo. I always thought he was a great character to adapt. I think he’s maybe, in some ways, the biggest comic book character that’s never been in a film. So I think it was a cool thing to do.”
