Squid Game phenomenon
Last year, when Squid Game season 3 finally premiered on Netflix, it easily shot to the Top 10 show of that week and the show would be well on its way to become one of the streamer’s Top 3 All-Time Most Popular on the non-English series list. The show’s popularity has also motivated Netflix to capitalize on the title by doing a spin-off for American audiences. For those who have seen the final episode of Squid Game 3, the closing minutes of the episode point to confirmation of the spin-off or, at the very least, tease that the games are part of a global network rather than existing solely in South Korea.
Korean titles surge on Netflix
Subscribers of Netflix often find that international titles have a very big place on the platform as you scroll through content. Thanks to the popularity of Squid Game and the disaster film The Great Flood, Korean titles have seen a huge growth in viewership and, according to Deadline, the Korean content craze on Netflix has garnered over 4.5 billion streams since they started publishing views in What We Watched reports from July of 2023. Squid Game is closely followed by King the Land as the second-highest-rated Korean show. Other Korean shows that became big hits include True Beauty with 47 million streams, My Demon with 45.8 million streams and Queen of Tears, with 44.6 million streams. All of these titles have been featured in Netflix’s top 150 shows.

Let’s not forget that Sony and Netflix recently had a giant hit on their hands with Kpop Demon Hunters, which also became a success at the box office, turning a lot of heads. Even though it isn’t strictly made in native Korea, the film is no doubt inspired by the music and the culture. Netflix and Sony are currently working to get a sequel released, although recent reports say it won’t be too soon.
The Chris Hemsworth action franchise, Extraction, will be getting a Korean spin-off with Don Lee (The Roundup franchise, Marvel’s Eternals, Train to Busan), Lee Jin-uk (Squid Game, Sweet Home), and Lisa of the girl group Blackpink (who appeared in The White Lotus season 3, where she was credited as Lalisa Manobal). This will be titled Tygo and shares its name with a former child soldier turned mercenary who gets revenge on Korea’s underworld after a mission gone wrong. Tygo is being produced by Big Punch Pictures and AGBO, with co-production by Nova Film and B&C Content.
