The Wayans brothers have returned! But even more than that, it looks like the whole cast of the first Scary Movie has returned for this new installment. And even Chris Elliot will be making a grand reprisal as his Scary Movie 2 character. Right off the bat, we’re reminded of Scream VI‘s New York subway sequence, except this time, a ton of horror movie villain references are thrown in, and it’s shown early on that the Wayans are planning to take no prisoners with their irreverent humor, with a satirical hook on gender identity. Audiences who saw Scream 7 in theaters this weekend got an additional joke, with the trailer ending with a character asking: “What would Halloween be without Jamie Lee Curtis or Scream without Neve Campbell?” The answer, of course being “Well that would be Scream 6.” Ouch.
The movie is also simply going by Scary Movie as opposed to Scary Movie 6. This is possibly to avoid acknowledging the existence of the sequel entries without the Wayans clan, but also parody how Scream 5 went by just Scream, which was also a satire on rebooted movie titles taking on the same name as their original film.
The official plot synopsis reads,
Twenty-six years after outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer (“Ghostface”), the Core Four are back in the killer’s crosshairs and no horror movie IP is safe. Marlon Wayans (“Shorty”), Shawn Wayans (“Ray”), Anna Faris (“Cindy”), and Regina Hall (“Brenda”) reunite in Scary Movie alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t final. Nothing is sacred. No trope survives. Every line gets crossed. The Wayans are back to cancel the Cancel Culture.
The cast includes Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, Kim Wayans, Benny Zielke, Cameron Scott Roberts, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan, Heidi Gardner, Lochlyn Munro, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif and Sydney Park.
The script was written by Marlon Wayans & Shawn Wayans & Keenen Ivory Wayans & Craig Wayans & Rick Alvarez. However, this time, Keenan Ivory Wayans does not return to direct and Michael Tiddes steps in to helm the film. Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans and Rick Alvarez are also on board as the producers of this entry.
The new film hits theaters this summer on June 12.
