The Golden State Warriors are currently navigating a challenging stretch of the season, dropping three of their last four games while facing some of the toughest teams in the league. Matchups against the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and most recently the Oklahoma City Thunder have tested Golden State‘s depth and resilience.

Injuries across the roster have only made the situation more difficult. With several teammates sidelined, veteran forward Draymond Green has taken on an even larger defensive responsibility – something he says he embraces at this stage of his career.

Green, now 36 years old, recently spoke about being tasked with guarding some of the league’s most dangerous scorers.

According to comments shared by Warriors reporter Joseph Dycus on X, Green described those matchups as a point of pride.

“Think our coaching staff has figured out that I have a lot more energy when I get that kind of stuff,” Green said.

“If coach calls on me to guard Kawhi Leonard, to guard KD, to guard Shai, that’s a badge of honor.

“I’m 36 years old, three games straight, that’s a badge of honor,” Green is quoted as saying.

Those matchups include defending elite players like Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – a demanding task for any defender, let alone a veteran deep into his NBA career.

Green embraces toughest defensive assignments

Green explained that receiving those assignments from head coach Steve Kerr actually energizes him.

Rather than viewing the responsibility as a burden, he sees it as recognition of the trust the coaching staff has in his defensive abilities.

The four-time NBA champion said it motivates him to play with greater intensity.

That effort was visible in the Warriors‘ recent game against the Thunder. In addition to anchoring the defense, Green also contributed offensively, finishing as Golden State‘s third-leading scorer with 16 points.

Green also emphasized that pride plays a major role in how he approaches these defensive battles.

“I have to take on that responsibility and make sure that we don’t have to help each other,” he said. “I am a very prideful person. I just can’t go out there and get murdered.”

He acknowledged that facing elite offensive players inevitably leads to difficult moments, but insisted that his mentality prevents him from backing down.

“It’s going to happen when you’re playing against great players like that. But at the same time, I just can’t go lay down,” Green added.

Throughout his career, Green has often faced criticism for his intense and sometimes controversial playing style.

However, his relentless competitiveness and defensive versatility have been key elements of the Warriors‘ success.
