The Las Vegas Raiders are making deliberate moves to shape their offensive identity, particularly as expectations grow around the possibility of adding Fernando Mendoza as a cornerstone at quarterback. With the franchise looking ahead to the next phase of its roster build, the organization has addressed a key coaching vacancy by bringing in an experienced voice to guide its young signal-caller.
When the Raiders finalized their coaching staff on March 1, they did so without naming a quarterbacks coach. That omission has now been corrected with the hiring of Mike Sullivan, a veteran coach with extensive experience developing quarterbacks at both the collegiate and professional levels.
According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, Sullivan will take on the responsibility of working closely with Mendoza in Las Vegas, should the draft unfold as many expect.
Sullivan most recently served as a senior offensive assistant at Rutgers, where he contributed to offensive game planning and player development. While that role expanded his broader understanding of offensive strategy, his background is deeply rooted in quarterback coaching.
Over the course of his career, Sullivan has held the quarterbacks coach title on multiple occasions, giving him direct, hands-on experience in mentoring players at the position that often defines a team’s success.
His NFL rsum includes several notable stops. He previously worked with the New York Giants in two separate stints (2010-11 and 2015), as well as with the Denver Broncos in 2018 and the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2021 to 2023.
In addition to his quarterback-focused roles, Sullivan has also held coordinator positions, including offensive coordinator duties with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2012-13) and the Giants (2016-17). His coaching career dates back to 2002, reflecting more than two decades of experience in the league.
A seasoned mentor for a franchise’s next potential leader
For a team preparing to integrate a highly touted rookie quarterback, the presence of a coach with Sullivan‘s background can be a stabilizing factor. The transition from college to the professional level demands rapid adjustments, including mastering complex playbooks, reading sophisticated defensive schemes, and handling the speed of the NFL game.
Having a dedicated coach focused on that development can significantly influence a young quarterback’s trajectory.
The Raiders’ decision to assign a specific coach to oversee quarterback development highlights a strategic emphasis on specialization. Rather than dispersing responsibilities across multiple staff members, the organization is ensuring that its prospective franchise quarterback receives focused attention tailored to his growth.
As the offseason continues, the potential pairing of Mendoza and Sullivan will be closely watched by analysts and fans alike. If Mendoza does become the Raiders’ long-term answer under center, Sullivan‘s experience and mentorship could play a pivotal role in shaping his early career.
