The Warriors plan to include Jimmy Butler in a major trade that will make them stronger

The Golden State Warriors are approaching a pivotal offseason, with growing indications that the franchise is prepared to make bold moves to restore its status as a championship contender. Central to those discussions is the potential inclusion of Jimmy Butler in a blockbuster trade package, an option that highlights the urgency surrounding the team’s current trajectory.

The 2025-26 season has been defined by instability. Injuries have plagued the roster, preventing Stephen Curry and Butler from consistently sharing the floor.

In fact, Golden State has gone more than two months without its two biggest stars appearing together in a single game, a setback that has severely limited cohesion and competitiveness.

Despite those challenges, the Warriors have attempted to remain competitive, even stringing together a brief winning streak against lower-tier opponents.

However, a heavy loss to the Denver Nuggets served as a reminder of the gap between Golden State and the league’s elite.

With Curry nearing a return from injury, there is still hope for a late push, but the broader outlook suggests that meaningful change is inevitable once the season concludes.

At the heart of the organization’s urgency is Curry himself.

Entering his 18th NBA season and approaching his 39th birthday, the four-time champion continues to perform at an elite level.

Yet the window to maximize his remaining years is narrowing. Another season of mediocrity could test even his long-standing loyalty to the franchise.

Butler could be key to unlocking a blockbuster deal

To address roster limitations, the Warriors may need to make a difficult sacrifice. According to Sam Quinn of CBS SportS, Butler‘s contract could be used as a central piece in a trade for another superstar.

“The Warriors have no clear cap space to free up, so they’ll have to hope his deal remains intact and tradable,” Quinn wrote.

“Even then, cost will be a factor. Golden State would presumably use Butler’s expiring contract as the matching salary and offer draft picks as value.”

While moving Butler may seem drastic, several factors make the decision more practical.

The veteran forward is 36 years old and recovering from a significant ACL injury from February, raising questions about his long-term durability.

Trading him would not drastically alter the team’s timeline but could open the door to acquiring a more impactful or better-fitting star.

Names frequently linked to the Warriors include LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kawhi Leonard.

Each presents unique challenges.

James, nearing his mid-40s, would likely require a substantial financial commitment, while Antetokounmpo would command immense trade value due to his prime-age dominance.

Why Kawhi Leonard could be the answer

Leonard, though an ideal on-court fit with Curry, carries a lengthy injury history that complicates any potential deal.

Compounding the challenge is Golden State’s limited trade capital. The roster skews older, and the team lacks a deep pool of emerging young talent, meaning any major move would require precise execution from the front office.

Nevertheless, the direction is clear. The Warriors cannot afford to stand still.

With Curry still performing at a high level but nearing the twilight of his career, the franchise must act decisively to remain competitive.

Including Butler in a trade may be a difficult decision, but it could ultimately be the catalyst needed to usher in a new era of contention in the Bay Area.
