Marco Reus bid farewell to Borussia Dortmund fans in perfect fashion on the final day of the Bundesliga season as he prepares to leave the club this summer.
The 34-year-old playmaker made his last Bundesliga appearance for the club after a 12-year spell in which he made 427 appearances, scored 170 goals and won four trophies.
And after signing off with a goal in their 4-0 hammering of relegated Darmstadt, Reus showed his gratitude with an enormous gesture to the fans.
The former Germany international returned the favor by treating the 80,000 fans who watched the match to a round of beer at the Signal Iduna Park bars, according to Sky Germany.
“It was the last time I was at home and I wanted to enjoy it. I’m incredibly grateful for the affection people have shown me,” Reus said after the game.
“I hope to give something back to them. It was perfect to feel the atmosphere of the ‘Yellow Wall’. I will definitely visit them.”
The perfect way to finish
Earlier on Saturday, he scored from a freekick as Dortmund ran riot, with goals also coming from Ian Maatsen, Julian Brandt and Donyell Malen, to bring the curtain down on their Bundesliga campaign.
Reus was substituted on 82 minutes by head coach Edin Terzic to receive a standing ovation from the fans as Lukas Nmecha came on his place, with Terzic describing it as “almost a perfect day”.
Dortmund, who finished behind Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig in fifth, clinched qualification for next season’s Champions League.
They still have the Champions League final at Wembley against Real Madrid to navigate, but Reus has already said goodbye to the fans who thanked him with a ‘Danke Reus’ banner before the game.
