The WNBA offseason delivered a blockbuster move Monday as Angel Reese, one of the league’s most dynamic young stars, was traded from the Chicago Sky to the Atlanta Dream. The deal marks a major shift for both franchises and closes one chapter in Reese‘s professional career.
Reese, 23, entered the league as the No.7 overall pick in the 2024 draft and instantly made her presence felt. In her first two WNBA seasons with the Sky, she established herself as one of the elite rebounders in the league and was selected as an All-Star both years – accomplishments that few players achieve so early in their careers.
Her combination of size and relentless energy on the court quickly made her a fan favorite and a cornerstone of Chicago’s roster.
She finished her rookie season averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game, earning a trip to the All-Star Game, finishing second in Rookie of the Year voting, and receiving MVP votes – a remarkable start for any newcomer.
Reese elevated her game in her second season, averaging 14.7 points and 12.6 rebounds while improving her two-point field goal percentage from .400 to .478. Her ability to dominate the glass and contribute offensively cemented her reputation as one of the league’s most promising young stars.
Despite Reese‘s consistently strong individual play, the Sky struggled collectively, posting disappointing records in each season she was on the roster. Offcourt friction also surfaced in Chicago. Over the 2025 season, Reese became increasingly outspoken about the team’s direction, publicly urging improvements and calling for stronger talent around her.
Some comments led to disciplinary action, including a suspension, and strained her relationship with the organization. She later clarified her statements, emphasizing that her criticisms were never intended to undermine her teammates.
“I’m not settling for the same s*** we did this year,” she said a few days before being suspended by the team.
“We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me.”
Atlanta Dream gets a franchise-changing addition
Atlanta will be sending its 2027 and 2028 first-round draft picks to Chicago and gains the right to swap a 2028 secondround pick. The Sky now hold additional valuable draft assets, positioning themselves to rebuild and restock through future selections.
Reese made it clear she can’t wait to get started with the Dream, posting on X: “An Angel’s DREAM. ATL WHAT UP?!”
Adding Reese changes the trajectory of the Dream’s season. Atlanta finished the 2025 season with one of its best records in franchise history and expects Reese‘s physicality and rebounding prowess to complement their core group of playmakers and scorers.
The organization’s leadership has expressed confidence that Reese‘s strengths – her ability on the glass and competitive spirit – will boost their championship ambitions.
As the 2026 season approaches, all eyes will be on how Reese‘s impact unfolds in a new setting and whether this high-profile trade will help transform both franchises’ fortunes. The coming months will reveal whether this trade becomes a defining moment in Reese‘s career and a turning point for Atlanta’s championship pursuit.
