In the vicinity of North Iceland’s Vaðlaheiði tunnel, a naturally occurring hot spring has captured the interest of tourists, boasting warm 30°C waters and an accompanying scenic waterfall. The spring’s emergence was a serendipitous event, occurring during the construction of the Vaðlaheiði tunnel when workers inadvertently tapped into a hot water vein. This happy accident resulted in a stream that cascades down cliffs, forming an inviting and picturesque waterfall.

Despite its growing popularity, the site remains unmarked by official signs or acknowledged by tourism boards, and lacks basic amenities such as changing facilities, leading visitors to improvise by hanging their garments on nearby foliage. The absence of formal recognition has left many bathers in a gray area regarding the legality of their use of the spring for bathing purposes.

Maria Lauridsen, a visitor from Denmark, shared with RÚV her thoughts on the situation, expressing a common sentiment among tourists that the presence of other bathers implies a tacit approval of the site’s use. “We assumed it must be acceptable as others have used it before us. We’re hoping it’s fine until we’re told otherwise,” Lauridsen commented during her visit.

The hot spring and its enchanting waterfall have seen a surge in popularity through social media platforms. Many visitors have turned to Google Maps as their primary means of discovering this hidden gem, drawn by the allure of a free and natural bathing experience in such a serene setting. While the spring itself is the primary attraction for a refreshing dip, the waterfall also serves as a significant point of interest for those venturing to this secluded location.
