The Kansas City Chiefs are looking strong heading into the 2024 season, according to recent NFL roster rankings by Pro Football Focus (PFF). PFF placed the Chiefs at number two, a significant improvement from their positions in the past two years (number four in 2023 and number eight in 2022).
While PFF acknowledges quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the team’s undeniable strength, there are lingering concerns about the offensive line, particularly the left tackle position.
The Chiefs are currently looking at second-year player Wanya Morris and rookie Kingsley Suamataia to fill the role, leaving the position in a state of uncertainty rather than outright weakness.
Meanwhile, the team’s biggest X-factor, according to PFF, is wide receiver Rashee Rice. Rice‘s impact goes beyond his on-field talent.
Rice stole the spotlight
As a rookie in 2023, he impressed with 79 catches for 938 yards and seven touchdowns, earning an 85.0 PFF grade. However, his off-season has been marred by legal issues that could result in a suspension, potentially hindering the Chiefs‘ offensive performance.
The suspension’s length and timing remain unclear. While the legal process might delay it until 2025, any absence from Rice would be detrimental.
Conversely, if he avoids suspension in 2024, the Chiefs‘ receiving corps could become the most talented group Mahomes has ever had, thanks to additional offseason acquisitions.
Despite the uncertainty, the Chiefs have shown their support for Rice by including him in organized team activities (OTAs).
This suggests they’ll stand by him during the legal proceedings and any eventual NFL-imposed punishment.
