Dave Portnoy earned a massive $1.6million payday after successfully backing the Boston Celtics to overcome the Dallas Mavericks to win the NBA championship.
The Barstool Sports founder savored another huge windfall from his betting exploits after landing a seven-figure payout following the Celtics‘ victory. The Celtics wrapped up the series 4-1 by Game 5, beating the Mavericks 106-88 on Monday night.
After limiting the influence of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, performances from Jayson Tatum and MVP Jalen Brown helped the Celtic claim their the first title since 2008 to spark mass celebrations.
While the team celebrated with green and white confetti at TD Garden, Portnoy was celebrating another impressive bet at the expense of DraftKings.
After watching Scottie Scheffler defy odds of +550 to win the RBC Heritage 2024 tournament, he only needed the Celtics to triumph in the NBA Finals with shorter odds of +145.
That was never in doubt due to their dominance, and the 47-year-old posted proof of his betslip – which included a $100,000 stake on the two-way parlay – netting him a cool $1.6m.
“It’s not about the money but I’ll take the quick 1.6 milly. #dkpartner,” Portnoy tweeted on X.
Dave Portnoy savages Kyrie Irving
As the Celtics basked in the glory of their 18th title, which helped them surpass the Los Angeles Lakers as the league’s most successful team in history, Portnoy couldn’t resist a dig at Mavs star Irving.
The point guard, 32, played for the Celtics from 2017-2019 but his relationship with the fanbase turned sour after his acrimonious departure to the Brooklyn Nets brought an end to his disappointing stint with Boston.
Portnoy sent him a message taunting Irving, claiming was snuffed out by the Celtics and got “stomped out” by the city of Boston.
“Kyrie has been totally vanquished. An absolute no-show in the most important game of his life,” Portnoy wrote on X.
“This will be my last anti-Kyrie post for the foreseeable future. The Celtics and the city of Boston put him in our back pocket. He stomped on the logo and then got stomped out.”
