The two-time NCAA men’s basketball champions, the UConn Huskies, announced Monday that Dan Hurley will remain their coach for the rest of the decade, signing a new contract that will keep him in Storrs through 2030.
Loyalty award for the coach, who was tempted by the Lakers to make the jump to the NBA, but with two details that draw attention. The first one is that Hurley will not be the highest paid coach in the NCAA, although he receives a raise of 2 million per year,
He will earn 5 million more in this last renewal, something that is considered a low amount considering what others have made. The second situation is that, his new contract at UConn is much less than the one offered by the Lakers.
Dan Hurley is earning his money based on his experience
Hurley’s new contract is for 6 years, ending in 2030, for $50 million, while the Lakers’ offer was for the same period of time and $70 million, 20 more. The logical conclusion to this is that the coach simply did not want to go to Los Angeles, since they were not going to make him one of the five highest-paid coaches in the NBA.
In 2010 he had his first opportunity in the NCAA, coaching Wagner College. From 2012 to 2018 he coached Rhode Island, after which he was chosen to revive one of the best programs in college basketball, UConn.
His first two years were not good, not even qualifying for March Madness, but he began to rebuild the program and the Huskies were national champions the last two seasons, producing multiple players for the NBA. UConn became the first two-time NCAA basketball team since Al Horford and Joakim Noah’s Florida Gators in 2006 and 2007.
