One month before their debut on the EFL Leage One against Wycombe Wanderers, Wrexham AFC have to deal with bad news that will influence the first matches of the season. Striker Paul Mullin will miss the opening period of the 2024-2025 season. Mullin had to undergo a spine surgery in London in the middle of June to correct a long-term lower-back and hamstring issue.
He has been dealing with this pains for a long time, where he has managed those injuries by conservative treatments, which only postponed the need of surgery. Wrexham said this in a statement a week ago: “During off-season training it became evident that this approach would not be able to continue and, following several consultations, it was determined that surgery would be the best way forward.” He also missed six league games at the beginning of last season due to lung injuries and ended up obtaining promotion.
Mullin is one of their most important players
The Englishman is a big loss for the team because during the last three seasons at Wrexham, he has accomplished many remarkable achievements: He has scored more than 100 goals, has led the team to get promoted twice and has also scored 24 goals in 38 matches, which made him win the club Player of the Season last May.
The third-oldest football club in history is now on one of their most important years, ahead of a new challenge, the EFL League One. They got to play in League One back in the 2004/2005 season, but were relegated in the same year. It is the highest they have even been, and now they have a second chance to make history.
No need to be worried too much
Manager Phil Parkinson addressed the situation: “Mulls is going to be close to maybe missing a couple of games at the start of the season if everything goes well but no more than that”. He gives a little hope about his return but it is taken for granted that he will not make it to the upcoming preseason games against Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Vancouver Whitecaps.
“Having the operation now gives him the best chance to only miss the start of the season” Parkinson also said.
Anyway, Wrexham AFC believe their star can recover as fast as he has done in the past. Everyone is optimistic about a quick recovery, even his manager: “It is a blow but he is a fit lad and doesn’t take long to get back. He will have his own mini pre-season and we will get him back as fit as we can”.
The 29 year old is awaiting the moment of his recovery, meanwhile, the club seems to have faced a setback with their early ambitions. The season is very long and in a competition like Lague One, you can not depend on a single player.
