Could Gareth Southgate become USMNT coach after England resignation?

Gareth Southgate is now on the market as a club and international manager following his resignation from England, and he is being linked with the United States Men’s National Team job.

Southgate made the tough decision to resign from his post as England Men’s National Team coach on Tuesday, just two days after the Three Lions were beaten in the 2024 European Championship final by Spain.

This is the second successive European Championship final that Southgate and England have been beaten in, losing on penalties against Italy in 2021 at Wembley Stadium.

The team has also reached the World Cup semi-final in 2018 and a quarter-final in 2022 under Southgate’s stewardship, but a first men’s trophy since the 1966 World Cup continues to elude the nation.

The USA are also without a coach as Gregg Berhalter was dismissed following a very poor showing in the Copa America this summer.

U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker and Southgate worked together for years during their time at the English FA and many think that Southgate could find himself getting a phone call from Crocker once the dust has settled on his resignation.

Southgate’s resignation statement

In a statement, shared by the official England account on X, Southgate said: “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.

“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”

Thanking England fans, who Southgate said were the “best in the world,” he added that he “looks forward to watching players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can”.
