The arrival of the U.S. basketball Dream Team in Paris has not been entirely pleasant for one of its members, Joel Embiid.
The 76ers player was singled out as soon as he stepped on French soil, with local fans making it clear they aren’t happy with his decision to play for the USA after becoming a French citizen.
This decision made fans think he would play for the host nation at the Olympic Games and at the most recent World Cup. However, after Embed failed to suit up for France at that tournament, his decision not to play for Les Bleus was confirmed after he decided he would be playing for the USA.
French fans shouted “give back your passport” as Embiid got on his team’s bus while smiling a little. He then continued on his way as he and Team USA step up their preparations ahead of their debut at the Olympic Games.
Embiid has struggled in lead-up games
While Team USA has won their lead-up matches to the Olympics, Embiid has struggled to find any sort of rhythm.
While the 76ers star ended the recent NBA season with 34.7 points, 11 rebounds and 5.6 assists, he hasn’t come close to matching that kind of performance.
This has led some to question whether coach Steve Kerr should keep him in the starting line-up, with Anthony Davis a possible replacement, while Bam Adebayo isn’t viewed as realistic option.
