Starting July 27, the basketball competition will begin at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Fifteen countries will be represented in the basketball events, and the teams will compete in a group stage, from which the final matches will determine the champions.
Participating teams
A total of 24 basketball teams, 12 men’s and 12 women’s, will gather in Paris to compete for the coveted Olympic gold medal. The teams are grouped into three groups, each consisting of four teams.
In the men’s competition, Australia, Greece, Canada, France, Japan, Germany, Brazil, United States, Puerto Rico, Serbia, South Sudan, and France are participating.
In the women’s competition, Serbia, China, Puerto Rico, Canada, Nigeria, Australia, France, Germany, United States, Japan, and Belgium have qualified for the Olympic Games.
Groups
The group stage consists of three groups of four teams each, who will face each other in a single round-robin format.
In the men’s competition, Group A will feature Spain, Greece, Australia, and Canada. Group B includes Germany, France, Brazil, and Japan. Finally, Group C consists of the United States, Serbia, South Sudan, and Puerto Rico.
Men’s Group Stage:
- Group A: Spain, Greece, Australia, and Canada.
- Group B: Germany, France, Brazil, and Japan.
- Group C: United States, Serbia, South Sudan, and Puerto Rico.
For the women’s competition, Spain is also in Group A, along with China, Serbia, and Puerto Rico. Group B includes Nigeria, Australia, Canada, and France. Group C comprises Germany, Belgium, United States, and Japan.
Women’s Group Stage:
- Group A: Spain, Serbia, China, and Puerto Rico.
- Group B: Canada, Nigeria, Australia, and France.
- Group C: Germany, United States, Japan, and Belgium.
Schedule
The basketball matches at the Olympic Games will start on July 27 with the Spain-Australia game and conclude with the gold medal final on Sunday, August 10, at 21:30.

Format
The competition begins with a group stage, where there are three groups of four teams each. The teams play three single round-robin matches.
The top two teams from each group and the two best third-placed teams advance to the quarterfinals.
Once the teams for the knockout stage are determined, they will be divided into four pots. Teams from Pot 1 will face teams from Pot 4, and teams from Pot 2 will face teams from Pot 3 in a draw to decide the matchups.
Pot 1: The two best first-place teams
Pot 2: The worst first-place team and the best second-place team.
Pot 3: The remaining second-place teams.
Pot 4: The best third-place teams.
