Patrick Mahomes has visions of Super Bowl after viral Xavier Worthy play stuns Chiefs training camp

Patrick Mahomes‘ options at wide receiver have been the talk of Kansas City Chiefs training camp, but nobody has impressed quite like Xavier Worthy. The rookie put a new skill on display on Sunday, and you could see Mahomes absolutely loving it in the background of a video posted by the Chiefs.

Xavier Worthy impresses Mahomes with new skill

Already in training camp, Worthy has proven that his record breaking speed will cause problems for NFL defenses when combined with the “bullsh*t” throws that Mahomes is known to make downfield. The former Texas Longhorn ran a 4.21 second 40-yard dash, the fastest in the history of the NFL Combine.

Still, his 5-foot-11, 165-pound frame caused concern for some before the 2024 NFL Draft, and he fell to the back-to-back Super Bowl champions, who traded up at the bottom of the first round to draft him with the 28th pick.

Evidence is beginning to mount that Worthy will be a game-changer right away. On Sunday in St. Joes, the rookie showed off strength, jumping ability and sure hands when Mahomes threw a jump ball in his direction, and he hauled it in for a touchdown.

“1 went up and got that,” the Chiefs’ official account wrote on social media.

How Xavier Worthy can be successful

Worthy proved that he can use more than just his lightning speed to beat defensive backs, which will be crucial to his success in the NFL. Andy Reid’s offense has succeeded in the past with speed demon Tyreek Hill as the No. 1 option. If Worthy hopes to replicate that, he will need to be as strong and sure-handed as Hill was.

Perhaps a better model to follow is Rashee Rice. He started 2023 low on the depth chart, but by the time the Chiefs made it to Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, his consistency made him their top wide receiver despite being a rookie.

Mahomes knows what he has with Rice, Isiah Pacheco and go-to man Travis Kelce. But if Worthy can continue to be more than just a deep threat, No. 15 might start dreaming of Lombardi No. 4.
