Pro Football Hall of Fame Game Teams: How are teams chosen for the NFL Hall of Fame game?

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Game is an annual exhibition match that marks the start of the NFL preseason. This game is a significant event, announced around the time the new Hall of Fame members are revealed, often during Super Bowl week. The timing ensures maximum publicity and attendance for the event.

Typically, the game features one AFC team and one NFC team, though there have been exceptions. For instance, in 2009, the Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills, both AFC teams, played to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the American Football League. Recently, the format has included either two NFC teams or teams with prominent alumni being inducted into the Hall of Fame that year.

Because the Hall of Fame Game occurs before the regular preseason schedule, the participating teams play an additional exhibition game. While this used to mean four extra games, it was reduced to three as of 2021.

Notably, the last four expansion teams in the NFL have made their debuts in the Hall of Fame Game. In 1995, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers faced off, and the Houston Texans appeared in 2002. When the Cleveland Browns were reestablished in 1999, they also played in the Hall of Fame Game. However, the Baltimore Ravens, established in 1996 after the original Browns franchise relocated, did not participate, as they were not considered an expansion team.

When is this year’s Hall of Fame game?

Overall, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game holds a unique place in the NFL calendar. It celebrates the kickoff to the preseason and honors the league’s legends. The game and induction ceremony occur before the regular preseason, making it a special event for both fans and players.

In 2024, the Hall of Fame Game will feature the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans, as announced by the Hall of Fame. The Bears will see Devin Hester, Steve McMichael, and Julius Peppers enshrined, while the Texans will honor Andre Johnson as part of the Class of 2024. The game will kick off at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, August 1, during the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week in Canton, Ohio.

Other inductees this year include Dwight Freeney, Randy Gradishar, and Patrick Willis. The Hall of Fame ceremony will take place on Saturday, August 3. This event not only highlights the new inductees but also sets the stage for the upcoming NFL season, bringing together fans and players in a celebration of football history.
