The main storyline leading up to the San Francisco 49ers second game of the regular NFL season is the fitness of Christian McCaffrey.
He was absent from the comfortable win over the New York Jets on Monday night and despite the victory, fans are anxious about being without him for the next test against the Minnesota Vikings.
McCaffrey has been dealing with a calf/Achilles injury throughout pre-season and he was not able to return in time for the season, and teammate George Kittle seems to have stopped a hint about McCaffrey’s condition.
In a postgame interview with ESPN anchor Scott Van Pelt, 49ers tight end Kittle said: “I think our offense has hit the ground running, and you’re going to see a lot of good offense from us, and when Christian’s back next week, you’re gonna see some of those fun plays.
“You’re gonna see the offensive MVP go out there and be a really good football player again.”
Clearly, Kittle thinks that McCaffrey is going to be fit in time, which is a response to ESPN’s Adam Schefter saying: “There’s a strong possibility McCaffrey might not suit up next week against the Vikings either,” when reporting that he would miss the Jets clash.
Shanahan jokes about rumors
Head coach Kyle Shanahan recently joked about how quickly this information had made its way into the world.
“That’s amazing,” Shanahan quipped. “That person must be God because we just found out he wasn’t playing today, and I have no idea how he’s going to feel tomorrow or the next day. I thought he was playing this whole week until today, so I don’t know who knows that he’s not playing next week.”
