Derrick White gets involved in a fight during college football game

Derrick White, a standout player for the Boston Celtics and recent gold medalist with Team USA, was caught in a physical altercation at the Colorado vs. Colorado State college football game on Saturday.

The incident, captured in a video, shows White being struck in the head, causing his hat to fly off during the fracas.

White, who was supporting his former team, the Colorado Buffaloes, in Fort Collins, became embroiled in a heated exchange with Colorado State fans. The situation escalated when a fan wearing a Colorado State hat took a swing at White in the third quarter.

The confrontation led to a pushing and shoving match, though the video did not show any additional punches being thrown. No police report was filed following the incident.

White will need to turn his focus back to basketball

Despite the off-field incident, White’s basketball career remains impressive. The 30-year-old guard played a crucial role in the Celtics’ NBA championship victory in June and also helped Team USA secure a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics.

White, originally from Parker, Colorado, had a brief stint with the Buffaloes during the 2016-17 season after transferring from Division II Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS).

Drafted 29th overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2017 NBA Draft, White spent five seasons with the team before being traded to the Boston Celtics in February 2022. He has been recognized for his defensive prowess, earning NBA All-Defensive second-team honors for the past two seasons.

Last season, White averaged 15.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game. During the Celtics’ playoff run, he averaged 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game, shooting 40.4 percent from three-point range.

White’s stellar performance earned him a four-year, 125.9-million-dollar contract extension with the Celtics over the summer. The altercation at the football game appears to be a minor blip in an otherwise successful period for the NBA star.
