Warren Moon talks about dangers of football: I had six concussions in my NFL career

NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon has reflected on the topic of concussions, especially in light of Tua Tagovailoa‘s recent struggles with head injuries. Moon revealed that he, too, experienced as many as six concussions during his career, though, unlike many former players, he has not seen any significant long-term impact from those injuries.

Now 67 years old, Moon’s NFL career spanned from 1984 to 2000, during which he played for several teams. Over that time, he was diagnosed with six concussions.

Despite these injuries, he shared that his health has remained stable, and he continues to pass medical checkups without issue. He admitted that he often wonders if and when he might feel the consequences of the repeated trauma to his head.

“If you ask certain people, I’m out of my mind,” he told TMZ Sports.

“But, for me, I feel like I feel pretty good. I’ve had a lot of neurology tests over the last so many years as part of the NFL’s evaluation process and I’ve passed all of those.

“I don’t feel like I’ve lost any memory or anything like that.”

Some advice for Tagovailoa

Turning to the present, Moon discussed Tagovailoa’s situation, acknowledging the tough decision the 26-year-old now faces. After sustaining a third concussion in a short period, Tagovailoa‘s future in the NFL has become uncertain.

Moon expressed his relief that Tagovailoa will have time on injured reserve to carefully consider whether to continue his career, a decision that could have long-term consequences for his health.

“So far, I feel really good,” Moon added. “I’m taking good care of myself. I’m hoping the same thing for Tua as he moves on with his life.”
