Skylar Thompson faces tough loss and injury in first start as Dolphins QB, fiance shows support

Skylar Thompson, backup quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, had the unwavering support of his fiance, Bre Newcomer, during his rare start against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. With regular starter Tua Tagovailoa sidelined due to a concussion, Thompson took over for his fifth career start but faced a challenging game both on the field and health-wise.

Ahead of the game, Newcomer shared her excitement on social media, posting from Seattle’s Lumen Field and highlighting Thompson’s pregame warmups on her Instagram. The couple, who got engaged in March of this year, has shared glimpses of their relationship on social media, with their first post together dating back to April 2023.

Thompson steps in for Tua, faces tough day

Thompson’s chance to lead the Dolphins came after Tagovailoa suffered his third NFL concussion in a Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills. With Tagovailoa on injury reserve, the spotlight turned to Thompson as Miami’s starting quarterback against a formidable Seahawks team.

In a pregame interview, Thompson expressed his excitement about the opportunity, particularly given Seattle’s famous “12th Man” crowd. “It’s a special place to play,” Thompson said. “For me, that’s what you want. Being able to go on the road and battle with the guys in that environment is fun.”

Unfortunately, the game did not go as planned for Thompson and the Dolphins. The team suffered a 24-3 loss, and Thompson struggled against a strong Seahawks defense, completing 13 of 19 passes for 107 yards with no touchdowns. To make matters worse, Thompson was sacked five times and exited in the third quarter after sustaining a chest injury. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel later confirmed that Thompson was dealing with rib pain, leaving his status questionable for the next game.

Dolphins’ next steps

With Thompson’s health in question, the Dolphins may have to rely on third-string quarterback Tyler Huntley for their upcoming home game against the Tennessee Titans. Despite his rough start in the NFL-having lost all five of his career starts-Thompson remains determined to prove himself as a valuable asset for the Dolphins.

As Miami looks to rebound from a 1-2 start, all eyes will be on their quarterback situation in the coming week, with fans hoping for a swift recovery for both Tagovailoa and Thompson.
