Travis Kelce turns to Taylor Swift for gameday help amid slow start to Chiefs’ season

The Chiefs might be 3-0, but it will not truly feel like Kansas City has reached a new level until superstar tight end Travis Kelce gets going. Kelce, the NFL‘s highest-paid tight end, has endured a tough start to the season with just 69 receiving yards and no touchdowns to this point — stats that have made him an unlikely target for criticism as well as Patrick Mahomes‘ bullet passes.

But Kelce and the Chiefs are calm over the 34-year-old’s slower-than-expected start to the season, knowing there are at least 14 games to go and trusting that the future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee is bound to make his mark. Kelce also has just about the world’s most famous woman in his corner as he fights through the early-season struggles.

Kelce’s new gameday tradition

Kelce had previously said that Taylor Swift, his girlfriend of about a year, had been helping the Chiefs draw up offensive plays and concepts. But the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter has found another way to aid Kelce — and there may be no better-qualified person to do so.

In a nod to Swift‘s use of “Easter eggs” in her frequently-changing attire, Kelce is taking part in an initiative started by his friend Harry Clark. Kelce and several Chiefs teammates are “coordinating” their gameday shoes this season, wearing vintage Nike Air Jordan kicks in chronological order until they reach the present day — with a red-and-white colorway, of course, a homage to the Chiefs’ team colors. The pair of Air Jordan 3s that Kelce wore last Sunday in Atlanta have been known to sell at auction for $15,000.

On the latest “New Heights” podcast episode, Kelce teased that he would wear Air Jordan 4s this weekend when the Chiefs take on the Los Angeles Chargers in a key divisional matchup. It’s an opportunity for Kelce to snap out of his funk as Kansas City eyes its first 4-0 start since 2020 — but whether he does or doesn’t, Kelce will rock up to SoFi Stadium dressed for success.

“Man, I wish I played as good as I felt,” he said on “New Heights”.
