Magic Johnson calls out Anthony Edwards for trash-talking: “you haven’t won anything yet”

Anthony Edwards, one of the rising stars of the NBA, has been making headlines recently, not just for his performances on the court, but for his bold trash-talking. In a recent interview, NBA Hall of FameMagic Johnson delivered a harsh reality check to the young player, advising him to focus more on winning than talking. Johnson’s critique comes after Edwards made controversial comments about Michael Jordan’s era, sparking widespread debate among fans and players alike.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Magic Johnson didn’t hold back when asked about Anthony Edwards‘ habit of trash-talking. The five-time NBA champion emphasized that Edwards should focus on earning his place among the league’s greats before engaging in bold talk. “You might want to talk trash when you’ve won something,” Johnson said. “But you haven’t won anything.”

Johnson’s advice came in response to Edwards‘ recent comments about Michael Jordan and his era, where the young Timberwolves star hinted that today’s players could have dominated the ’90s. While Edwards’ confidence is admirable, Johnson believes it’s premature for a player without any major accolades to be making such bold claims.

Focus on the game, not the talk

Magic Johnson also pointed out that Edwards should be directing his energy toward competing with today’s top teams. The Timberwolves had a strong run during the 2023-24 season, reaching the Western Conference Finals after defeating the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets. However, they were ultimately eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks. Johnson used this as an example to remind Edwards that there’s still much work to be done.

“If I’m Anthony Edwards, I’m concerned about the Dallas

Mavericks, about OKC, about Boston, about all these great teams,” Johnson said. “You got beat by the Mavericks. You didn’t make it to the championship. So I’m concentrating on that instead of what happened in a time you weren’t born.”

Johnson’s comments send a clear message to Edwards: the path to greatness is paved with hard work and results, not just talk. While Edwards‘ confidence is undeniable, his journey in the NBA is just beginning, and legends like Magic Johnson believe that actions on the court speak louder than words.
