With the NFL trade deadline closing in on November 5, the Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly eyeing Patriots linebacker Josh Uche to boost their defensive lineup.
Despite their dominant 6-0 season start, the Chiefs may still look to strengthen their pass rush by adding Uche, whose recent absence from the Patriots-Jets game has only fueled trade speculation.
How Uche could strengthen the Chiefs’ defense
Uche’s contract makes him a particularly appealing option for Kansas City. With only a $3 million deal and a manageable $1.3 million base salary, Uche could be an ideal addition to the Chiefs’ defense while keeping them within budget.
ESPN’s Seth Walder notes that Uche would be an upgrade from Mike Danna in passing scenarios, citing Uche’s 24.1 percent pass rush win rate this season, compared to Danna’s 4.4 percent. Walder emphasized Uche’s 2022 pressure rate of 18.5 percent-the highest recorded in ESPN’s data-as further evidence of his potential impact for the Chiefs.
According to Walder, Uche’s lower cost would help Kansas City, which is tight on cap space, maximize its defensive strength for a postseason push. Adding Uche could give the Chiefs the upper hand by increasing their pass rush pressure and adding depth to a solid defensive roster.
While no deal has been finalized, Uche has shown he’s aware of the possibility of a trade.
“Ultimately, I am an employee of the Patriots, and if they think it’s in their best interest to trade, I know they’ll do so,” Uche shared when asked about the swirling rumors.
His openness to change is well-timed, as he’ll be an unrestricted free agent after this season, giving the Patriots a reason to consider a move.
Despite his capabilities, Uche’s role has been somewhat limited in New England. Over seven games, he’s recorded 13 tackles and two sacks, having played only 35 percent of defensive snaps with just one start. With the Patriots struggling in their division and the Chiefs leading in theirs, both Uche and Kansas City could stand to benefit from a trade.
As the deadline approaches, fans and analysts alike wonder if a deal will materialize, potentially bringing Uche’s talents to Kansas City for a Super Bowl run. With the Chiefs eager to stay at the top of the AFC West, Uche’s addition might be just the boost they need.
