It all started so well for the Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron James shared the hardwood with his son Bronny on opening night, and rookie head coach J.J. Redick won his first three games in charge as cautious optimism over the Lakers‘ trajectory began to grow.
Since then, Los Angeles has come falling — maybe even crashing — back down to earth. Consecutive losses to the Phoenix Suns and LeBron‘s hometown Cleveland Cavaliers have prompted a bit of soul-searching in Lakerland — and some scathing commentary from the ex-broadcaster/podcaster Redick, risking a conflict with his one-time co-host LeBron.
Redick slams Lakers’ “mistakes”
Speaking to the media after the Lakers’ 134-110 loss to the 5-0 Cavs, Redick bemoaned his team’s lack of focus and inattention to detail, just days after calling out LeBron for being too passive.
“We made a lot of mistakes, simple stuff sometimes, low-man, rotations, not executing our switches early,” Redick said. “They did a lot of things to force us into those mistakes but when you play a good basketball team, you can’t make that many mistakes.”
Through five games, the Lakers are trending toward “elite” on the offensive end; Redick’s concepts and the talent of James and Anthony Davis has seen LA ring up the eighth-best offensive rating in the NBA to this point. However, the Lakers rank 25th in defensive rating, allowing 117.1 points per 100 possessions.
Despite receiving MVP-caliber play from Davis (30.6 points and 12.2 rebounds per game), Redick even left his star big man out to dry during a sequence that was heavily-criticized on social media as being reminiscent of what ex-Lakers coach Darvin Ham would have done in a similar situation.
It’s safe to say that there is a lot to work on in Lakerland as Redick gets used to his players and vice-versa. The Lakers continue their road trip with games against the Toronto Raptors, the Detroit Pistons, and the Memphis Grizzlies, giving Los Angeles a chance to restore its lost momentum.
