The NBA is a politically polarised competition. The players, mostly African-American, detest Donald Trump. Megastars such as LeBron James and Stephen Curry take every opportunity to show their disdain for him. However, the franchise owners, who are mostly white and many of them Jewish, support the man who will once again be president of the United States.
No one has done so in this election campaign more assiduously than Miriam Adelson, a 79-year-old Israeli businesswoman. She is the owner of the holding company that runs the Dallas Mavericks since last December when Mark Cuban sold her 77% of his shares. She has been the biggest donor to the Republican cause before this election. She gave $100 million, surpassing the $75 million contributed by Elon Musk. Small change for someone who is in the top 10 richest women in the world with an estimated fortune of more than $35 billion.
The Adelsons already gave $25 million for Trump’s first campaign. In 2020, that figure increased to $90 million. Now, as a widow, with the $100 million she has donated, she hopes to become one of the most influential civilians in the next legislature. If she really does have a say in the president’s decisions, for example, the war in Israel will not stop until the elimination of Palestine. She has never contemplated the two-state solution that the United Nations formulated in 1947, has never been implemented and seems impossible to achieve today.
Miriam is the widow of Sheldon Adelson, a tycoon who made his fortune from gambling. His companies have casinos in Las Vegas, Macau and Singapore. They were also the promoters of the Eurovegas project that was proposed on the outskirts of Madrid and did not materialize.
The dream of legalizing gambling in Texas
Trump’s victory could be a big boost for the future projects of the Mavericks owner, whose dream is for gambling to be legalized in Texas, one of the most populous states in the United States. When she took over the franchise, there was already speculation about this background, and there was even talk of a project in which the team would leave the current American Airlines Center to move to play in a newly built casino.
With the Republican victory in the elections, Miriam Adelson has also won. And if the Mavericks win the ring, they could be the first championship team to return to the White House with Trump in the presidency. The tradition was lost during his previous term due to confrontations with some NBA stars and with the league itself. But if Dallas were to triumph, it would be different. The boss is a friend of the president.
