Tragedy struck an Oklahoma family on Monday night as mother and son headed to the Kansas City Chiefs home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
As per the Kansas Highway Patrol, Connor Barra, 18, lost his life when he was involved in a crash that saw a Camaro hit him and his mother, Megan Barnett, 41, who was also in the car, head on.
The two were heading to the game after she surprised him with tickets.
According to police, Joseph Savage, 45, crashed into the two after veering into oncoming traffic around 4pm, though law enforcement is unclear as to why at this point.
Barnett surprised her son with tickets for his upcoming birthday, a GoFundMe, which had raised close to $95,000.
“She surprised him. He was shocked. It was not on his radar,” his Uncle Colin told KOKO. Connor’s father, Ted, wrote on Facebook: “You will always be in our hearts! Ya goofy ass!”
Megan has a long recovery ahead
Barra and Savage were both pronounced dead at the scene, while a third driver who was involved suffered no injuries.
As for Barnett, she is currently in the ICU in Tulsa in stable condition, though a fundraiser states she will require “extensive recovery”.
According to Connor’s Uncle Colin, the youngster swerved as he tried to avoid Savage’s vehicle. After slamming the breaks, his car turned to the side resulting in it taking the brunt of the impact. He believes that Connor’s reaction is the reason why Barnett is still alive.
Colin noted that Connor was extremely excited to watch the game, as well as his mother, given the matchup between the Chiefs and the Buccaneers.
“He really wanted to see Baker Mayfield play, and Megan, I think, wanted to see the Chiefs play, likely the Taylor Swift connection,” he told KOKO.
“He had an incredible amount of joy and an incredible smile. Especially for his age, he was incredibly mature and respectful.”
