There might just be a race forming for the Dallas Cowboys head coach role, and the Arlington franchise haven’t yet pulled the plug on current head coach Mike McCarthy.
But it appears as though that moment is coming, even if it is likely to be at the end of the season. The Cowboys are 3-6, and they are staring down the barrel of a disastrous season with starting quarterback Dak Prescott having undergone season-ending surgery.
Cooper Rush and Trey Lance will battle it out from here, and it’s fair to say hope among fans has been lost.
McCarthy may well be feeling the same about his job, given the question marks that hung over his position in the off-season, even after overseeing three 12-win seasons on the bounce.
Many argue that McCarthy was set up to fail this season given the poor trades and lack of off-season action in terms of recruitment.
The big decision on McCarthy‘s future will likely be made after the season, and there is already talk of NFL legend and current Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders taking the role, but that might just be fan talk.
Kyle Koster pointed out recently: “There’s a chicken-and-egg nature to all of this…because it only takes a tiny sliver of momentum to Astroturf something into existence.”
Belichick ready to step in
Bill Belichick is another who has been linked with the role having spent this season out of the game, at least as far as coaching is concerned.
The legendary coach lost credibility in his final years with the Patriots, having overseen baffling player and coach recruitment decisions, leading to the franchise falling into a deep hole as far as on-field performance is concerned.
Franchises have been hesitant to approach Belichick, unwilling to offer him the keys to the franchise, so to speak, and it’s likely the serial Super Bowl winner will have to settle for a role where he is not the de facto GM, instead operating solely in the head coach role, unlike his position with the Patriots.
“He’s fully invested. He wants to coach again.” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero has said of Belichick, who is currently working as a TV analyst.
The 72-year-old is currently 15 wins away from Don Shula‘s all-time winning record, but he was not successful in the last round of off-season interviews, coming closest to landing the HC job with the Atlanta Falcons.
