The Orlando Magic legend, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, has been mocked by fans for weighing in on the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight as he described affairs at the AT&T Stadium as “sad” as Tyson lost via unanimous decision.
At the age of 58, it was a tall order for the ex-undisputed heavyweight champion to beat someone almost 30 years younger than him and it proved to be too great a task on the night as The Problem Child took a comfortable points victory.
For fans, they were frustrated. The bout had been critcized in the build-up due to the age difference as well as adjusted rules as people suspected Iron Mike was well out of his depth and it turns out that’s how the NBA icon felt too.
“Just sad smh,” Johnson posted to X.com, formerly Twitter. “I cut it off because I couldn’t watch anymore.
“It’s sad to see Mike Tyson like this because I went to every Tyson fight. This fight tonight was not great for boxing.”
But if fans shared his sentiments on the fight, they kept them to themselves as they poured into the comments to mock the five-time champion for talking about a sport he’s never actually practised.
One fan commented, “I disagree with you. This is truly an example of what age does to anyone. For Mike Tyson to even step in the ring. That’s legendary. He has guts.. that’s what matters.”
A second added, “Nope. Tyson showed the world that he’s still a real one.”
A third wrote, “Mike did something amazing for his age. He should be proud.”
Who do the Magic play next?
The Orlando Magic currently sit third in the Eastern Conference with an 8-6 record, although they already trail the Cleveland Cavaliers by as distance six games and the Boston Celtics by 2.5.
They could take a step closer to the defending NBA champions if they manage to defeat the Phoenix Suns on Monday, November 18.
