Barcelona’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski scored the goal that opened the scoring against French side Brest on Tuesday, in a match that gradually became complicated at home for the Catalan team, which did not have its star player, Lamine Yamal. In doing so, he joined a select group of strikers by scoring in the Champions League.
Lewandowski converted a penalty that was committed by Brest goalkeeper Marco Bizot, in a move that even looked innocent, to open the scoring, just 10 minutes into the game.
With this goal, Lewandowski reached 100 goals scored in the continental tournament, joining a select group that includes Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Ronaldo scored 140 goals in the tournament, in his career with Sporting, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, and Lionel Messi, who scored 129 goals with Barcelona and PSG.
But that’s not all, Lewandowski does have the best scoring percentage among the three strikers, with his century scored in 124 games, with an average of 0.80 goals per game, better than the 0.79 that Messi has with his total scored in 163 games and the 0.75 of Cristiano, who achieved it in 187 games.
Neither Cristiano nor Messi will play in the Champions League again in their careers, while Lewandowski can continue to score, at least this season with the Catalan team, despite the fact that he is already a veteran.
Another piece of good news for Lewandowski is that behind him, there is a significant difference with the forwards looking to reach the century of goals: Thomas Muller, who has 54 goals, and tied with 49 goals are Kylian Mbappe and Mohamed Salah. Karim Benzema is also in the competition, with 90 goals, but he is also unlikely to play in the Champions League again.
Lewandowski has scored in the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund (17 goals in 28 games), Bayern Munich (69 in 78 opportunities) and Barcelona (14 goals in 19 games). In addition, this season, he has 21 goals in 19 games, remaining as the top scorer in LaLiga (15 goals) and another six in the Champions League.
