Whether it is on the court or off it, the Philadelphia 76ers are having a difficult 2024/25 NBA season.
With their record currently sitting at 3-14, good enough for 14th in the Eastern Conference standings, Philly are a long way from their preseason prediction of title contenders.
Adding to the drama is the status of star player Joel Embiid. After missing several games at the start of the season due to injury, the Cameroon native has been in headlines recently after details of a closed-door team meeting leaked to the media.
Reports suggest that Tyrese Maxey, one of the team’s up and coming stars, called out Embiid for his tardiness and lack of attention to detail.
While there were no denials about the reports, Embiid made it clear he wasn’t happy at the fact the information was leaked to ESPN.
“Whoever leaked that is a real piece of s**t. We talked about a lot of things [during the meeting]. I don’t want to get into the details, but that whole thing [with Maxey] probably took 30 seconds,” Embiid stated as per the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Paul Pierce says it’s over for Embiid and the 76ers
Speaking on Fox Sports ‘Speak’, former NBA champion Paul Pierce believes the time has come for Embiid and the 76ers to split as he doesn’t think the relationship can be salvaged.
“I hate to say it, but I believe the process is over in Philadelphia…,” Pierce said.
“They’ve tried this for a number of years, I think the relationships have soured in Philadelphia. Although Joel Embiid is a generational talent, an MVP in this league, I just think it’s time for both sides to part ways.”
