Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs finds himself in hot water after a social media misstep that could have far-reaching implications for his team.
Just one day after their Thanksgiving Day win, Gibbs shared a photo featuring teammate Jermar Jefferson standing in front of a whiteboard.
Yet, the board was clearly marked with a list of the Lions’ plays, inadvertently revealing critical strategic information to opponents.
The photo, which has since been deleted, went viral quickly, leading to a flurry of reactions online. Former Green Bay Packers offensive tackle David Bakhtiari weighed in on X, highlighting the severity of the situation.
“Yikes. This is very damning,” Bakhtiari said. “Plays are pretty universal. It’s the code words they assign and use at the line of scrimmage that is a problem. Going to have to completely revamp new words to assign.”
Coach Dan Campbell reacts to the incident
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed the situation during a media appearance on Saturday. Initially unaware of the post, Campbell responded with surprise when reporters asked if he had spoken with Gibbs about it.
“Oh, I didn’t know that. Yeah, I need to check on that. Did not know that. Yeah, I’d rather our stuff not be out there.”
The fallout from this incident may force the Lions to overhaul their play-calling system, especially the code words used during no-huddle and on-the-line scenarios.
While the plays themselves may be standard across the league, the code names give teams their competitive edge.
Gibbs, a rising star just 27 yards shy of his first 1,000-yard rushing season, could face consequences for the slip-up. While deleting the post came too late to contain the damage, it remains to be seen if head coach Campbell may consider benching Gibbs as a disciplinary measure to emphasize the importance of safeguarding team information.
