Dak Prescott upset with Jerry Jones over Mike McCarthy’s future, former Cowboys star says

The Dallas Cowboys find themselves in the midst of another turbulent season. Despite glimpses of promise, including back-to-back victories in recent weeks, questions about head coach Mike McCarthy‘s future persist.

These uncertainties gained new traction when quarterback Dak Prescott openly endorsed McCarthy while seemingly addressing concerns about team dynamics-a move that former Cowboys player Chris Canty believes may contain subtle criticism of owner Jerry Jones.

Prescott has flourished under McCarthy‘s leadership and made it clear that he supports his coach staying beyond his current contract, which expires after the 2024 season. “I believe in him wholeheartedly… he deserves a chance – another contract and a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. On his terms,” Prescott said. However, Canty interpreted this statement on Unsportsmanlike as a veiled critique of Jones‘ authoritative role within the organization.

“When you have the coach in the background and the owner/GM in the foreground setting the agenda of the entire franchise, that’s not a good thing,” Canty said. He went on to argue that Prescott‘s comments might reflect a locker room dynamic where players take cues from Jones rather than McCarthy. “The players in the locker room, just like the media members and all the fans, are taking their cues from the owner when he does his post-game press conference rather than the head coach addressing the team.”

The Looming Question: McCarthy’s Future

McCarthy‘s position as head coach remains precarious despite a strong regular-season record of 47-32 during his tenure. His playoff record, however, tells a different story, with just one win and three losses under his belt. With McCarthy‘s contract set to expire in 2025, speculation is mounting about whether the Cowboys will renew it or look for a new leader.

Chris Canty voiced concerns about how appealing the head coaching job might be for potential replacements. “I don’t know too many coaches that would have Mike McCarthy‘s resume or credibility as a head coach that won’t have an option other than the Dallas Cowboys where they don’t have to put up with that type of owner,” Canty remarked.

Jones, for his part, has publicly supported McCarthy, stating, “I’ve never thought for one second that the team had quit recognizing what an outstanding coach he is.” However, his reputation as an owner who maintains tight control over all aspects of the team often overshadows the role of his head coaches.

For the Cowboys, the next few games will be pivotal. If the team falters, it could mark the end of McCarthy‘s tenure. On the other hand, a strong finish may force Jones to reconsider and extend the coach’s contract.

As the season unfolds, all eyes remain on Prescott, McCarthy, and Jones as they attempt to steer the Cowboys toward stability and success.
