The Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers face off in a game that could be key to their postseason future, as the Chiefs are aiming for the best record in the AFC, while the Steelers are looking for the title in the North of the same Conference.

Both teams will play their third game in a span of 11 days in December, something that has only happened once since 1933, when the NFL was founded, and that was the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2011.

“You never want to play so many games in such a short time,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “It’s just not good for your body. But at the end of the day, it’s your job, your profession. You have to come to work and do it.”

A run of three games in 11 days never happened between 2019 and 2023. This season, four teams have already done so: the New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys.

But this time the challenge is different, as it comes at a time when players have felt the bumps and bruises of 14 previous games, and now prepare for encounters that could determine the AFC playoff landscape.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin often asks his players if they are thriving or surviving. During the final full month of the regular season, it’s more about adapting.

The Steelers have the toughest stretch of games as they are the only team to play three opponents with winning records: the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens and Chiefs. Road losses to the Eagles and Ravens in a six-day span affected the Steelers’ position in the AFC North.

If the Steelers lose to the Chiefs, and a few hours later the Ravens win against the Houston Texans, Pittsburgh will be one game behind Baltimore in the race for the division title.
