Chiefs could lose key pieces of coaching staff as Jets look to mimic Kansas City’s success

Chiefs could lose key pieces of coaching staff as Jets look to mimic Kansas City’s success

Given the level of success Andy Reid has experienced with the Kansas City Chiefs since taking over as head coach in 2013, some casual fans would likely ask why other teams don’t try to mimic his scheme, coaching style and overall direction. Of course, not every team has a Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, but certain cues and decisions could be copied in a sense from Reid’s Chiefs.

Some teams have actually tried by hiring away coordinators from Reid’s coaching tree. Some have worked then flamed out, like Doug Pederson with the Philadelphia Eagles. Others have been disasters, like Matt Nagy with the Chicago Bears. Despite Nagy’s previous mishap in the Windy City, he’s being considered for a head coach opening with none other than the New York Jets.

Andy Reid and the Chiefs surprise a team member with a gesture after beating the Houston Texans

Matt Nagy and Steve Spagnuolo both being considered by Jets for head coach

Nagy completed his interview with the team on Wednesday, but the Jets don’t only have eyes on the offensive coordinator from the Chiefs; they also requested an interview with defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Both Nagy and Spagnuolo have previous head coaching experience, so it’s not a surprise to see both of them getting interest from head coach-needy teams. Spagnuolo, in particular, is overdue for another shot after spending so much time as a notable defensive coach.

Losing either of his coordinators would be a big blow for Reid, but he hasn’t had any trouble keeping his team chugging along despite losing coordinators in the past. His offense has been stellar despite going through three different offensive coordinators since he took over as head coach in 2013.
