Dave Portnoy quits football after ref controversy costs him $1M Bills Super Bowl bet

The Kansas City Chiefs’ quest for a three-peat heads to New Orleans, Louisiana – home of Super Bowl LIX – after the defending champions beat the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game. The victory, however, was not free of controversy.

As superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, legendary tight end Travis Kelce and iconic head coach Andy Reid prepare to make history, some social media users and internet personalities blamed the refs for quarterback Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills’ defeat at Arrowhead Stadium.

Dave Portnoy goes on an epic rant

Dave Portnoy, the Barstool Sports founder, posted a video of a couple of decisions made by the referees that allegedly costed the Buffalo Bills the AFC Championship against Kansas City. The social media personality went on a rant because he couldn’t believe what he saw.

The first play was a 3rd down and 3 with 13 minutes and 23 seconds left on the fourth quarter. Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen passes the ball to tight end Dalton Kincaid, who runs to get a 1st down. Even though it appears that the offensive player got the job done, the refs seemed to miss the spotting of the ball by placing it a yard behind the 1st down line.

“This spot is disgustin, knee is not down and tha’ts a first down so that’s spot off, that’s a bad spot right there by half a yard right there. And then we gonna go for it on fourth down, which we all know what happens, but the fact that this refs…”. On the next play we see Josh Allen failing to convert on fourth and 1.

“This is clearly a first down, it’s like not even f****** close. And then what is this? That one ref is a foot off. You just randomly decide where you’re throwing the football? Like, what if the other guy got the spot? This is the most disgusting thing, I’m not watching football ever again, I quit football! First of all, he only has to get to the line, are you kidding me? I quit football, it`s not even close!” Portnoy added.

Chiefs overcome challenges to get to the Super Bowl

It hasn’t always been pretty this season for the Kansas City Chiefs, but every week, the defending Super Bowl Champions simply find a way to win. Sunday, they knew they needed to put up points to beat Josh Allen and the Bills. Andy Reid’s team responded by putting up 32 points, the first time they’ve been above the 30-point plateau all season.

Patrick Mahomes was sensational on key downs, as the Chiefs converted 5 of 9 third downs and their lone fourth-down try. That efficiency allows the march to go on. Kansas City will play for the NFL’s first-ever three-peat in two weeks at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

They will face the Philadelphia Eagles, one of the NFC’s best teams that are lead by star quarterback Jalen Hurts and sensational running back Saquon Barkley. It would be a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, when the Chiefs beat the Eagles 38-35 in a sensational game that went down to the wire.
