Anthony Davis’ private call with Rob Pelinka and initial reaction to Mavericks trade exposed

The NBA world was left stunned after the Los Angeles Lakers traded Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in a deal that no one saw coming. While Jimmy Butler dominated trade rumors throughout the window, it was Lakers GM Rob Pelinka who pulled off the ultimate surprise, sending Davis to team up with Luka Doncic. But what’s even more surprising is Davis‘ reaction to the deal and the details are now coming to light.

During The Hoop Collective podcast, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst revealed that Davis waived a $6 million trade kicker, a bonus he was entitled to after being traded. “I had an executive tell me that within an hour of the trade announcement, Bobby Marks confirmed AD had waived his trade kicker,” Windhorst said.

One last time! LeBron and Davis share emotional handshake as Lakers teammates before trade to Mavericks

It would’ve been paid by the Lakers but counted against the Mavericks’ salary cap. Davis letting it go helps Dallas stay under the luxury tax.

This decision speaks volumes. Not only did Davis forfeit a hefty bonus, but he also showed he was on board with the trade, supporting the Mavericks‘ financial flexibility for future moves.

Inside Rob Pelinka’s post-trade calls

After the deal was finalized, Pelinka made a series of quick calls, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. The first was a joint call with Davis and Mavericks head coach JJ Redick, followed by a call to Davis‘ agent, Rich Paul. Surprisingly, the third call went to LeBron James.

Contrary to earlier reports suggesting LeBron was blindsided by the trade, this new information hints that he was looped in shortly after the agreement. Sources suggest LeBron is excited about Davis‘ move, especially since it aligns with his long-standing desire to play alongside Luka Doncic.

As the dust settles, it’s clear both Davis and LeBron are at peace with the trade. Davis’ willingness to waive his bonus speaks to his readiness for a fresh start in Dallas, while LeBron’s enthusiasm hints at the potential for exciting new dynamics in the league.
