Manta Network unveils a dual-layer approach to tackle finality issues in Layer 2 networks, enhancing security and efficiency through MANTA token and Bitcoin integration.
Manta Network has introduced an innovative dual-layer solution aimed at addressing the persistent challenge of achieving fast and secure state finality in Layer 2 (L2) networks. This development promises to significantly reduce finality times while maintaining robust security and decentralization, according to Manta Network.
Understanding the Finality Challenge
Finality refers to the point at which a transaction becomes irreversible on a blockchain. In traditional optimistic rollups, finality can take up to seven days due to the two-layer blockchain system involved. This lengthy period can impede user experience and asset efficiency. Manta Network currently operates as an optimistic rollup on Ethereum, where transactions are executed and bundled into batches, with state roots published to Ethereum and transaction data stored on the Celestia data availability layer.
Our Two-Layer Solution
To enhance finality, Manta Network has implemented active validation through MANTA token staking using Symbiotic’s restaking protocol and additional security via the Babylon Bitcoin staking protocol. This dual-layer approach allows for immediate native validation and leverages Bitcoin’s security model to verify state roots independently, reducing reliance on the 7-day challenge period.
Bitcoin Security
The Babylon staking protocol involves BTC holders staking their tokens to participate in the validation process. Finality Providers validate state roots and use an Extractable One-Time Signature scheme to confirm the validity of these roots. Validations are then sent to a smart contract on the Babylon network and subsequently relayed to Ethereum.
Results and Benefits
The dual-layer validation system enables faster transaction confirmations and shorter withdrawal periods, down to a few hours. The approach also reduces operational costs by selectively using zero-knowledge proofs for quick validation during challenges, while maintaining high security standards through a slashing mechanism to deter malicious behavior among validators.
Conclusion
Manta Network’s dual-layer solution represents a significant advancement in L2 scalability, providing both speed and security. By combining MANTA token restaking with Bitcoin’s robust security, the network not only addresses finality challenges but also lays the groundwork for future scalability innovations.
