New York Jets eyeing Shedeur Sanders: Can Coach Prime’s heir be their next franchise quarterback?

The New York Jets are about to begin their second rebuild in three years. After letting go of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and with the arrival of head coach Aaron Glenn, the team hopes to start a new era on the right foot. For that, they could go for one of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft, Shedeur Sanders.

Rodgers’ departure left the Jets in a dilemma, not only because of the impact that his three-year, $112 million contract left on the salary cap, but also because the team was built around him. Glenn will have to get to work immediately, and the first step should be to get a new quarterback who can carry the team on his shoulders.

While the team hasn’t announced its plans in this regard, some analysts believe the front office could skip free agency and go straight to the draft to land a young signal-caller. The 2025 draft class has some excellent candidates at this position, and Shedeur Sanders is near the top of the list.

Will Shedeur land with the Jets?

The son of the legendary Deion Sanders is one of the top quarterback prospects for the 2025 draft. The younger Sanders finished the 2025 NCAA season with 353 completions, 4,134 yards, and 37 touchdowns, which left the Colorado Buffaloes with a 9-3 record and led them to the Alamo Bowl.

Most mock drafts place Shedeur among the top five picks in the draft, and some even place him in the top three. The problem for the Jets? Their 5-12 record gave them the seventh pick in the draft.

Ahead of the Jets are the Titans, Browns, Giants, Patriots, Jaguars, and Raiders. Of those six teams, three have a quarterback at the top of their priority list, which leaves the Jets virtually out of the running for Shedeur unless they can negotiate a move up the roster, which won’t be easy.

As if that weren’t enough, Sanders Sr. has a big say in his son’s future and is very clear about which teams he doesn’t want to draft him. The list isn’t public, but Coach Prime has hinted that the Jets are on it.

The Jets have other options

Some analysts believe the “Gang Green” could make a serious push to land Shedeur, but there are some free-agent prospects who could make an immediate impact on the team. Sam Darnold, Zach Wilson, and Trey Lance are three veterans on the market who could have what the Jets are looking for.

If they’re looking for an immediate impact, the team will likely go all-in on free agency. If they’re looking for a long-term rebuild, they could go all-in on a rookie in the draft. But will that rookie be Shedeur Sanders? We’ll find out in April.
