Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was arrested: What were the reasons?

Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was arrested Saturday morning by Dallas police after officers responded to a call about a fight. Police said 56-year-old Armstrong and a woman were arguing when he hit her with a gun and threatened to shoot her. Armstrong and the victim knew each other, according to reports.

Armstrong’s fight was with a woman

Dallas television station WFAA cited multiple anonymous police sources to identify the victim as a woman. It was unclear if Armstrong has an attorney who could comment on his behalf. WFAA reported that Armstrong has posted bail since he was booked Saturday morning.

The Mavericks said they were aware of the incident and were gathering information. The NBA did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but it was learned that the woman was Armstrong’s partner and that she would have reproached him for text messages from another woman, and then threatened him.

Mavs employee suspended after allegations

However, in a turn of events, the team announced on Sunday that they had suspended an employee, who was not identified, after Armstrong was arrested on the charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

“The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings,” the team said. “This matter is currently under review by the relevant legal authorities. Due to this fact, we will allow the legal process to take its course and will refrain from further comment while the proceedings are ongoing.”

Armstrong spent two seasons with the Mavericks at the end of his 14-year playing career and was a backup point guard on the 2005-06 team that reached the NBA Finals, losing to Miami. He joined Dallas’ coaching staff in 2008-09.
